Why Men need Yoga

August 9, 2018 By Douglas Fischer

Yoga

Men and Yoga

With the launch of our yoga program “Optimize Yoga” we wanted to take some time to dispel some of the misconceptions men have about yoga.  Many think yoga is a lighter form of fitness that women mostly partake in.  There is a recent study from Yoga Journal showing that men now make up 28% of the people taking classes.  Below we will explain the benefits and how it can help your overall health and fitness as well as enhance your current workout or sport.

  Strengthening

Bodybuilding or weightlifting tends to work at building muscles of specific body parts like chest, biceps, shoulders and quads. Yoga on the other hand builds muscles evenly over the whole body while increasing range of motion and flexibility.  Normal workouts might ignore some muscle groups, specifically the stabilizers, while yoga is effective for overall muscle strengthening. Best 7 Ways To Avoid High School Sports Injury

soccerNearly 30 million children and adolescents are participating in sports in the U.S.  This high number of participants means an increase in sports injury potential.

In fact, high school athletes account for nearly 2 million injuries per year with 62% of these occurring in practice! These alarming numbers can be reduced if our younger athletes are properly prepared and precautions are taken. [Read more…] about High School Sports Injuries

Springtime

May 8, 2018 By Douglas Fischer

Springtime

Springtime, spring fever, spring in your step.   These are all things that pop into our heads with the change in weather to warmer temperatures and days that are becoming longer.  With that we feel a need to revisit our outdoor activities.  Whether it’s participating in sports, recreational activities or yard maintenance there is an inane desire to be doing something outside.  This is all good in that any activity is beneficial to your physical and mental health, but we would like to caution you to take it slow and prevent injury.

Our brains remember where we were physically and at what intensity level we could push to.  The unfortunate truth is that our bodies don’t remember this, especially so as we age.

With a little common sense, resolve and precaution you can take advantage of the nicer weather to improve your physical and mental health without having to deal with an injury throughout the summer that you incur now.  It is important to allow your bodies time to adjust to this increase in activities.  [Read more…] about Springtime

Active vs. Static Stretching

November 1, 2017 By Bryan Kreitlow

Yoga StretchStretching is one of the most important things we can do to improve flexibility and help to prevent injuries during sports and recreation.

Stretching is equally as important with those who are more sedentary. Especially if you have a job that requires you to sit at a desk or at a computer station all day.
The questions people often ask me is “when is the best time to stretch?” or “what kind of stretching should I be doing?”
The answer to these questions are based on what the goal of the stretch and the activity that stretching is involved in. However, before we get into that, let’s go over the types of stretching that you can do. [Read more…] about Active vs. Static Stretching

Natural Alternatives to Opioids

September 2, 2017 By Bryan Kreitlow

The opioid and prescription drug crisis is rising, but what are the alternatives?

Prescription Drugs opioids

It’s no secret that opioid and prescription drug addiction is a huge problem in America. The United States makes up 5% or the world’s population and consumes almost 80% of the world’s opioid supply. Consequently, there has been a growing epidemic of deaths related to opioid overdoses. A recent study showed that nearly half of all opioid deaths in America are related to prescription medications. Of course, this is not to say that pain medication is not necessary. Acute hospitalizations, trauma, surgeries, child birth and end of life care are all appropriate times for these types of medications.  For a majority of the world, this is when they are used.
